The Paris-based Bureau International des Expositions is the governing body of World and International Expos.

The BIE’s mission is to ensure the integrity and quality of Expos so that they continue to educate the public and promote innovation in the service of human progress.

The BIE was established by an international convention signed in Paris, France on the 22 November 1928.

The national governments of member countries of the BIE take part in a World Expo by building pavilions and creating exhibits that illustrate the chosen World Expo theme for the benefit of millions of visitors.

There are currently 169 member countries, including South Africa.
